After you’ve learned which knife to use for what task and how to take care of them, it’s time to consider how you’ll store them. That's where a universal knife holder comes in.
Metal knife holders are sleek and simple, but could potentially bend the blade of your knife if you’re not careful. Knife blocks are classic, but only really perform their best with the knives they were made for. That’s why the universal knife holder is king. I’ve had one on my counter for over a year and I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it.
The flexible rods adapt to any size knife, meaning you can stick anything from a long serrated bread knife to a stubby paring knife into the cluster of rods and it’ll hold it all the same. Mine currently holds at least seven knives of varying length and I never feel that they’re at risk of hitting each other or, even worse, falling out. It’s also slim enough to fit into an unused corner of my counter but still has the same amount of blade real estate as a regular knife block.

Wrapped in natural bamboo, this holder features plastic fibers that can hold knives up to eight inches deep. The interior is also removable and dishwasher safe.
If you really want to keep your knives in their specific slots, this is a great option for you. It’s made from durable hardwood and will hold all your knives at an arm’s reach.
This is my current knife block and I appreciate it more and more each day. There's no futzing to figure out which knife goes where and it's easy to slide any size knife in or out.
This one from Mantello has two tiers to separate your bigger and smaller knives or to keep your steak knives out from your utensil drawer. It fits knives that are up to 8-inches long and the rod inserts are removable and dishwasher safe.
A more elegantly designed option is the Kuhn Rikon Knife Block that has a flexible inlay up top and a clear base so that you can see which knife you’re grabbing, without having to memorize a handle.
