U.S. officials said Monday that they are in talks with Israel on the release of Jonathan Jay Pollard, a former intelligence officer who is serving a life sentence for spying on behalf of Israel. The Americans, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the discussion was part of an attempt to move the Middle East peace talks forward. Benjamin Netanyahu and Shimon Perez have called for the release of Pollard, who many Israelis argue has already served more time in prison than most Americans convicted. Two former Secretaries of State, George Shultz and Henry Kissinger, and a former director of the CIA, R. James Woolsey, have also called for his release.
