Two U.S. defense officials confirmed Tuesday that a U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots at an Iranian patrol boat they say was demonstrating provocative action. The boat, likely operated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, came within 150 yards of a U.S. Navy patrol ship in the Persian Gulf. Officials say Iranians were unresponsive to radio communication, warnings, and other signals of danger, but the Iranian boat did stop approaching the U.S. ship after the shots were fired.
