U.S. Sees First Malaria Outbreak Since 2003

Five cases, in Florida and Texas, have been identified.

For the first time in 20 years, malaria is spreading inside the United States. The Centers for Disease Control says it has identified four cases of the mosquito-borne illness in Florida and one in Texas. While about 2,000 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, it’s nearly always in people who were infected internationally. The last time there was a local outbreak was in Palm Beach County, Florida, in 2003.
