A newly released video from the Department of Defense appears to show U.S. Navy pilots encountering a UFO. ABC News reported Monday that the pilots confronted the mysterious object in 2015 while flying along the East Coast. The 36-second video of the sighting was released by To the Stars Academy for Arts and Science, a scientific research and media company. “What the f--k is that thing?” a shocked pilot of the F/A-18 Super Hornet can be heard saying. “Oh my gosh, dude,” another pilot says in the clip. The To the Stars Academy is led by Dr. Hal Puthoff, a NASA and DoD adviser, and James Semivan, a former U.S. Central Intelligence Agency service member. In an op-ed published in The Washington Post Friday, Christopher Mellon, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence in the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations, blasted the U.S. government for the lack of research on these incidents. “If the origin of these aircraft is a mystery, so is the paralysis of the U.S. government in the face of such evidence,” he wrote. Last December, The New York Times reported on two declassified videos of alleged UFO encounters. In a statement to ABC News, the DoD confirmed the existence of the now-defunct Advanced Aviation Threat Identification program, which investigated unidentified flying objects until 2012.
