A rusty old boxcar like those used to transport men, women and children to Auschwitz arrived in New York City Sunday morning, according to the Associated Press. The windowless train car is part of a 700-piece exhibit that will be the largest of its kind on the Holocaust at the Manhattan Museum of Jewish Heritage. The exhibit, which opens on May 8, marks the anniversary of the date in 1945 when Germany surrendered and the Nazi death camps were liberated. “There were 80 people squeezed into one wooden car, with no facilities, just a pail to urinate,” Ray Kaner, a 92-year-old woman who survived the Holocaust told AP. “You couldn’t lie down, so you had to sleep sitting, and it smelled.” Nearly 6 million people perished in the Holocaust. The exhibit will close January 3, 2020.
