A volcanic eruption in central Japan on Tuesday spewed rocks at guests of a ski resort, leaving nearly a dozen people injured and a soldier reported dead in a resulting avalanche, according to Japanese media reports. Authorities in the town of Kusatsu said several people suffered broken bones after being pummeled by volcanic rocks while on the ski slopes. Local media reports said 11 people were injured, two of them seriously. The volcano, Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, also triggered an avalanche that buried several people under the snow, including six Japanese soldiers.
