As Hurricane Matthew tore through South Carolina, it apparently dug up a bit of South Carolina history: several eroded Civil War cannonballs.

Richard Beck, the former mayor of Folly Beach, was walking along the beach when he discovered what looked like brown rocks. Recognizing the holes used for their fuses, Beck realized the rocks were actually cannonballs.

"It didn't surprise me really, but it delighted me," Beck said.

The cannonballs are no longer on the beach, however. As a precaution, local law enforcement and the U.S. Air Force quickly detonated them, a century and a half after they were supposed to blow.
