Syrian refugee women stand in line to receive their families’ share of winter aid kits at Zaatari refugee camp, near the Syrian border. Cranes lifted trailers into place and tents are packed away as international aid workers rush to winterize the massive refugee camp in Jordan, trying to avoid a repeat of last year, when three days of torrential ran turned Zaatari into a muddy swamp. Plans to distribute clothing, blankets, and electric heaters come as the 120,000 residents brace for their third winter in exile.

Chaos, a Chimpanzee, looks through the glass at visitors during his public debut in the Onstead Foundation Chimpanzee Habitat at the Houston Zoo. Six chimpanzees were relocated to the zoo through the combined efforts of Lincoln Park Zoo’s Project ChimpCARE, the Houston Zoo, and Curtis and Bea Shepperson, the chimps’ owners. The Sheppersons had been under pressure from officials in the Mechanicsville, Virginia, area to relocate the chimpanzees because of a recent escape and the lack of proper licenses.

An Ultra-Orthodox Jewish family lights candles on the fifth night of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, the festival of light, at the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Sheaarim. Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem in 165 B.C. following the victory of the Jewish Maccabees over the Seleucid Empire, when there was only enough consecrated olive oil to fuel the eternal flame in the Temple for one day, but miraculously the oil burned for eight days.
