West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt died at 96 on Tuesday, according to the paper he co-published. Schmidt shepherded West Germany through economic turmoil and the Cold War. “We have lost a sharp-witted adviser, a trusted companion and a good friend,” the newspaper, Die Zeit, said in a statement. “Until recently, he contributed to the editorial team with his analyses, his commentaries, and his interviews about current affairs.”
