White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders refused to say the media is not the “enemy of the people” during the daily White House press briefing Thursday. She called the request from reporters “ironic,” and told CNN’s Jim Acosta that the media “repeatedly resorts to personal attacks without any content other than to incite anger.” She then went on to describe how the media has attacked her personally, and also mentioned how the White House Correspondents’ Association chose Michelle Wolf to host the annual Correspondents’ Dinner, during which the comedian made jokes about Sanders. “I’m the first press secretary in the history of the United States that’s required Secret Service protection,” Sanders said. “The media continues to ratchet up the verbal assault against the president and everyone in this administration and certainly we have a role to play, but the media has a role to play for the discourse in the country as well.” This comes after President Donald Trump’s daughter and senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump said that she did not think the media was the enemy of the people, a departure from her father’s previous statements on the press.
