Talks in Vietnam between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have broken down with no agreement reached. In a press conference after abrupt end to the summit, Trump said that “sometimes you have to walk” but stressed that “it was a very friendly walk.” He went on to say he’d spent “pretty much all day with Kim Jong Un, who is quite a guy and quite a character… we decided not to do any of the options, and we’ll see where that goes.” Trump said the sticking point was that North Korea “wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn’t do that. They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that… we had to walk away from that particular suggestion. We had to walk away from that.” Trump added that Kim has agreed not to test rockets or nuclear weapons, adding: “I trust him, and I take him at his word. I hope that’s true. But in the meantime we’ll be talking. Mike [Pompeo] will be speaking with his people.”
