A witness to Wednesday’s shooting at a Kroger grocery store near Louisville, Kentucky, claimed the suspected gunman spared his life and told him, “Whites don’t shoot whites.” The Courier Journal reports Ed Harrell was waiting for his wife, Elaine, inside his car when he heard gunshots, prompting him to grab his revolver and crouch next to his car. Harrell said he saw the alleged shooter, 51-year-old Gregory Bush, walking “nonchalantly” through the parking lot with his gun. Harrell said he asked Bush what was going on, and Bush replied, “Don’t shoot me. I won’t shoot you. Whites don’t shoot whites.” The newspaper reports that Bush fled the scene in his car and was apprehended by police shortly after. He faces “two counts of murder and 10 counts of wanton endangerment” after allegedly fatally shooting a black man, 69-year-old Maurice E. Stallard, in the head inside the Kroger and a black woman, 67-year-old Vickie Lee Jones, in the grocery store’s parking lot Wednesday. Police said Thursday they believe Bush attempted to enter First Baptist Church of Jeffersontown, a predominately black church, just minutes before the Kroger shooting.
