A recording obtained by Pitchfork reportedly captures late rapper XXXTentacion, or Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, confessing to abusing his ex-girlfriend and describing being involved in a fight where three people were killed. The recording was reportedly made around the time of Onfroy’s October 2016 arrest for alleged aggravated battery of a pregnant victim, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and witness tampering. In the recording, the rapper is heard telling acquaintances he started “fucking [his girlfriend] up” because he believed she cheated on him. “I started fucking her up because she made one mistake. And from there, the whole cycle went down. Now she’s scared. That girl is scared for her life. Which I understand,” he is reportedly heard saying. Onfroy also reportedly discussed a January 2016 incident at Deerfield Beach, Florida, where three people were stabbed but no one was charged. “I’m on [Miami] New Times for stabbing, how many people they put in the news? They said three, it was eight,” he reportedly said. The 27-minute tape was obtained from the Miami-Dade County state attorney’s office, which said both the prosecution and defense “considered the tape a confession” in his domestic abuse case, which was closed after he was killed in June. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and maintained his innocence until he was shot earlier this year.
