Beto O’Rourke has announced that he’s running for president in 2020. The former El Paso congressman sent a message to KTSM on Wednesday, saying: “I’m really proud of what El Paso did and what El Paso represents. It’s a big part of why I’m running. This city is the best example of this country at its best.” On Thursday morning, O’Rourke officially confirmed his campaign in a video, saying: “This is a defining moment of truth for this country and for every single one of us. The challenges that we face right now, the interconnected crises in our economy, our democracy and our climate have never been greater.” He went on to say: “We are truly now, more than ever, the last great hope of Earth. At this moment of maximum peril and maximum potential, let’s show ourselves, and those who will succeed us in this great country, who were are and what we can do.” O'Rourke didn’t have a national profile until his run for Senate last year against Republican Ted Cruz. Although he lost, the result was much closer than expected.
