TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE?

The Department of Homeland Security has announced a temporary suspension of horse patrols in Del Rio, Texas, after a video that apparently showed Border Patrol agents trying to corral refugees went viral. “We have ceased the use of the horse patrol in Del Rio temporarily,” a DHS official was quoted saying by CNN on Thursday. “We’ll prioritize other methods for identifying individuals who might be in medical distress.”

(Editor’s note: While there were claims the Border Patrol agents whipped migrants with horse reins or ropes, an agency investigation has found no one was struck. However, the investigation found that agents used inappropriate force and language, and one agent admitted “twirling these split reins as a distancing tactic.”)
