Florida Gov. Rick Scott finally announced Monday that he will be challenging incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, setting up what could be an extremely expensive and close contest in the Sunshine State. As with many 2018 contests, the race will likely involve a proxy referendum of Donald Trump’s presidency, as he crucially won the state in the 2016 presidential election, and Scott has been a longtime ally of the administration. “I never planned to fit in, and I won’t fit in in Washington, either,” Scott, who has been the governor since 2011, said in a video announcing his run. “It’s time to shake that place up. We don’t need another politician in Washington. It’s full of politicians, and that’s why it’s broken.”
