Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) has backed the legalization of marijuana, saying: “I think it gives a lot of people joy. And we need more joy in the world.” Harris, who announced her presidential run last month, was appearing on The Breakfast Club radio show in New York City when it was suggested to her that she's against legalization. “That’s not true,” she responded, going on to joke: “Half my family is from Jamaica. Are you kidding me?” She told the hosts that she smoked a joint “a long time ago” in college, “and I did inhale,” and she added: “I just broke loose.” The senator wrote in her book, which was released last month, that it was time to legalize and regulate marijuana, and added: “We need to expunge nonviolent marijuana-related offenses from the records of millions of people who have been arrested and incarcerated so they can get on with their lives.”
