Tributes have poured in for the actor, who was beloved by his co-stars.
The actor had spoken previously about the severity of his health struggles after becoming addicted to vaping.
The four-time Emmy nominee had been playing the soap opera’s beloved cardiologist since 1977.
“He was always a gentleman, always supportive, and he and his wife Judith who preceded him in death, were always gracious to me and welcoming,” co-star Anthony Crivello wrote.
A family statement said Wayne Northrop “was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s six years ago.”
The actor, 70, began acting on the show in the 1980s and was a mainstay in more than 4,200 episodes.
Nicholas Pryor died at home in Wilmington, North Carolina, on Monday.
