MacDill Air Force Base in Florida was briefly locked down Friday morning after the sound of suspected gunfire was heard nearby, according to the local Fox affiliate. The base, situated near Tampa, is home to the headquarters of U.S. Central Command or CENTCOM. There were initial reports that there was an active shooter inside the base. However, the local sheriff’s office posted shortly afterwards to clarify that wasn'tt the case. “Despite some reports, there is no active shooter on MacDill,” wrote the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. The Fox affiliate reported the base was locked down for nearly an hour and said a base spokesperson confirmed the shots were heard outside.
