Coming from anyone else, it would be a completely innocuous statement. But, coming from Queen Elizabeth, who is usually sworn to silence on all political matters, it’s being read as a decidedly frosty warning for her bickering lawmakers to grow up. As Britain hurtles toward crashing out of the EU in March, with no sign of British lawmakers approving Prime Minister Theresa May’s deal with the bloc, the country is in the midst of its worst crisis in decades and its politics has been split into pro- and anti-EU camps. While the queen, 92, didn’t mention Brexit explicitly, her comments have been interpreted by the British media as an unusual intervention. She said during a speech: “As we look for new answers in the modern age, I for one prefer the tried and tested recipes, like speaking well of each other and respecting different points of view; coming together to seek out the common ground; and never losing sight of the bigger picture.” Perhaps not the most terrifying language, but lawmakers should consider themselves warned.
