Texas Zoo Debuts Its First Shark Only to Have It Killed by an Eel

A shark that was moved across the country to protect it from its own kind was unexpectedly slain by a moray eel at a Texas zoo, The Dallas Morning News reports. Zookeepers learned of the devastating attack Jan. 19 against the 4-year-old bonnethead named Loki, who became the Cameron Park’s first shark last fall and had just made his debut in November. “It’s like one of your dogs kills another dog,” said Terri Cox, the zoo’s programs and exhibits curator. “It’s one of those things you can’t predict.” Loki, who weighed in at just 4 pounds and was barely 30 inches long, was transferred to Waco from Chattanooga’s Tennessee Aquarium due to bullying from sand tiger sharks with whom he previously shared a space. Plans to bring Loki’s brother, Thor, to the zoo have been put on hold in light of recent events.
